Hurricane Lala weakened this Sunday to a tropical storm after lashing Hawaii with strong winds and rain the day before, leaving some areas flooded and one person dead, although these conditions are expected to continue throughout the day.

One person died last night in a traffic accident attributed to bad weather on the Big Island, according to local authorities. This island was the most affected by the effects of Lala, which yesterday became a category 1 hurricane and passed very close to the archipelago, without making landfall.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the storm left accumulations of up to 33 centimeters of rain and power outages in 60,000 homes. The power outage also affected three hospitals, but the president clarified that they remain operational through auxiliary generators.

Although Lala weakened this Sunday, the governor asked the population to be cautious, since the effects of the storm will remain present throughout the day on all islands.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicated in its latest bulletin that “destructive winds” and heavy rains continue on the Big Island and Maui County, while it expects conditions to worsen in Oahu, the island where Honolulu is located.

The agency revealed that the storm’s maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 110 kilometers per hour, and forecasts a weakening between today and Monday.

However, it warned that the combination of a dangerous storm surge and tide will cause habitually dry areas near the coast to flood due to rising water levels.

The NHC predicts that Lala will continue to move westward and progressively move away from the archipelago in the coming days, when it may transform into a hurricane again.

Despite its location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii does not usually suffer hurricanes. Since 1950, only two have made landfall in this archipelago, so the proximity of Lala raised alerts from state authorities.
