For the first time in a decade the Irish state has refused more Palestinian visa applications than it  granted – while Israelis continue to benefit from visa-free travel to Ireland.

Sixty-three percent of Palestinians seeking to stay in Ireland on a short-term basis had their applications refused, according to government statistics.

The refusal rate for Palestinian applicants has quadrupled since 2023.

Meanwhile Palestinians seeking a long-term visa currently face a refusal rate of more than 50 percent – against a rate of just nine percent last year.

The University Times yesterday reported a sharp increase in the number of Palestinians refused study-specific visas for Ireland.

Academics helping Palestinians study in Ireland have criticised the government’s handling of visa applications.

Travellers from Israel continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Ireland as it wages a genocide in Gaza that has killed more than 70,000 people.
