Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.
Mexico Embraces You: Returning with Dignity271,000 Mexican nationals returned to the country and received more than 1.5 million services. These include food, health care, transportation, and social well-being program benefits. President Claudia Sheinbaum noted that Mexico welcomes them “with dignity, with respect, and with open arms.”
Sovereignty: A Question of Defending the HomelandRegarding the U.S. government’s decision to revoke visas for politically engaged individuals, the President pointed to a possible political and interventionist motive. Sheinbaum recalled that presidents Fox and Calderón opened the doors to U.S. government agencies. “In Mexico, the Mexican people decide,” she explained.
Mexico Does Not Bow Down to AnyoneSheinbaum defended a relationship with the United States free from subordination and questioned those who seek foreign backing. “Why should we lower our heads? Why should we bow down?,” she asked. The President affirmed the country’s history of sovereignty, noting that “we are heirs to the best of Mexico.”
More Democracy, No CensorshipSheinbaum defended codes of ethics, audience ombudsmen, and complaint mechanisms proposed for the media. “What does that have to do with censorship? Nothing,” she noted. The President contrasted these measures with the pressure exerted on the media during the Fox and Calderón administrations and called for transparency regarding manipulation in social media.
Mexico Is Moving Toward PeaceAugust 13 was the safest day on record in recent history, with 20 homicides registered nationwide. Sheinbaum highlighted the results of the security strategy and noted that Mexico will present them at an international conference in Argentina.
Mexico: Things Are Going WellIt was emphasized that the economy will gain momentum in the second half of the year, driven by new public works projects: “I told you the economy was going to take off even more,” the President remarked.
