Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Friday that he is arranging a phone conversation with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, to tell him directly not to interfere in Brazil’s internal affairs, especially its presidential elections this coming October.

“I am trying to contact him, face to face, to tell him not to meddle in Brazil’s business, especially in the elections. If they interfere, they will lose,” the president declared in an interview on the podcasts Não Inviabilize and As Cunhãs.
Lula accused the Trump Administration of meddling to favor his main electoral opponent, far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, and warned that any country that tries to comment on the Brazilian elections will lose.
“Despite the traitors to the nation and the fact that my adversary’s brother (Eduardo Bolsonaro) lives in the United States spreading lies and slander about Brazil, we will defeat them and defend our sovereignty,” the progressive leader declared.

The president emphasized that he never interfered in the U.S. elections and reiterated his willingness to engage in dialogue: “I don’t want a war. I want to agree to a conversation to tell them that Brazil wants to have a good relationship with the United States. We don’t want to fight with the United States, nor with China, nor with Russia, Bolivia, or Spain,” he stated.
However, Lula pointed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio as responsible for the current bilateral crisis, asserting that Rubio dislikes both Brazil and Latin America.
On the trade front, the Brazilian president recalled that the United States imposed additional tariffs of 25% and 12.5% on Brazilian products based on what he described as false information about deforestation and slave labor. In response, he announced that he had initiated the process to apply the Reciprocity Law against these tariff measures.
“What I have is my conscience and the truth. No one can beat Brazil with lies, and I will defeat the United States through my narrative,” he asserted.
