On Friday, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump filed an emergency appeal with the Supreme Court seeking permission to immediately resume construction of the ballroom at the White House after a court halted the work a week ago.

“This project, like its predecessors, should be a matter for the president and the political process, not construction through a judicial order,” according to the appeal.
On Aug. 7, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit halted construction until the White House obtains congressional authorization, in a decision that will take effect in one week.
“The decision whether or not to build a large ballroom belongs to Congress, and is not a matter of executive self-help… Each president is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House and its executive residence,” the judges said.

The Trump administration filed the appeal within the 14-day legal deadline, and the appeal reactivates the Supreme Court’s emergency docket while the court is in its summer recess.
The ballroom construction, which has involved demolishing the White House’s East Wing, is one of Trump’s major priorities during this term, driven by his desire to leave a significant legacy.
“The Ballroom is a gift from President Trump and great patriots of the United States of America,” he wrote a week ago on his Truth Social account.
From the outset, the construction has faced opposition from organizations that protect U.S. heritage because they consider that work on the ballroom began without the relevant preliminary studies.
