Communist Party leader Zyuganov and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Cuba
On Thursday, hundreds of Russians paid tribute to Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro at the foot of the monument in his honor, carrying Cuban flags and bouquets of red flowers.

“In these difficult times, Fidel is a model and an example to follow to achieve victory over the most evil forces in history,” Russian Communist Party leader Yevgeny Zyuganov said.
He recalled that U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower threatened Fidel and that “nine U.S. presidents tried to strangle him and suffocate the Cuban people.” “He defeated them all and showed us the example of how we must fight, live and win,” the communist leader said.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov attended the ceremony organized by the Cuban Embassy. He emphasized Fidel’s historical stature and the strategic alliance between Havana and Moscow.
“Castro will always be one of the clearest symbols of our era, a figure of truly global scale. He was a convinced supporter of a new multipolar world order, and although these terms were not used at the time, he led and foresaw much of what is happening and will happen on the road toward liberation from imperialist shackles,” he said.
He also referred to the U.S. blockade imposed nearly seven decades ago, saying that “the implementation of new restrictive measures is a manifestation of the impotence of the United States, which cannot break the will of the Cuban people.” “We categorically reject this policy. We express unwavering solidarity with our Cuban friends,” Ryabkov said.

During his lifetime, Fidel prohibited statues from being erected in his honor. Today, however, monuments to Fidel exist in Nicaragua, Mexico, Venezuela, Vietnam, and South Africa.
At the foot of the statue, attendees, many of them wearing shirts commemorating the revolutionary leader’s centennial, were able to hear a translation of the lyrics to the song “El Necio” by Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, as well as the song performed by the Russian group Grenada.
At the end of the ceremony, Ryabkov and Cuban Ambassador to Moscow Enrique Orta unfurled the ribbons from the floral tributes placed before the monument.
Russia, a political ally of Cuba since the Cold War and one of its main trading partners, describes its ties with Havana as a “strategic partnership” and has repeatedly condemned the U.S. blockade.
To help ease Cuba’s deep energy crisis, which has affected the island since January, Russia sent a vessel to Cuba in March carrying about 730,000 barrels of oil.
