This July was the lowest for the month in 12 years, with 44 fewer intentional homicides each day than when Sheinbaum took office.

The daily average of intentional homicides in Mexico dropped 51 percent between September 2024 and July 2026, going from 86.9 to 42.5 cases per day, reported the head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), Marcela Figueroa Franco, who noted that this past month recorded the lowest level since the start of the current administration.

In presenting the Crime Incidence Report, prepared with information from the prosecutor’s offices of the 32 states and figures consolidated as of July 31, she detailed that there are currently 44 fewer intentional homicides each day compared with September 2024.

The official emphasized that July 2026 also recorded the lowest daily homicide average for a month of July in the last 12 years, when comparing the corresponding data for that month since 2015.

The reduction is also observed when the comparison is broadened to the first seven months of each year. Between January and July 2026, an average of 48.6 intentional homicides per day was reported, the lowest figure for that period since 2016.

In presenting the evolution of this crime over the last four presidential terms, the head of the SESNSP indicated that during the term of Felipe Calderón—from 2006 to 2012—the daily average of intentional homicides rose 148 percent, while between 2012 and 2018, under former president Enrique Peña Nieto, the increase was 42 percent.

By contrast, during the administration of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador—from 2018 to 2024—a reduction of 9 percent was recorded. For the current administration, the Secretariat compared the average of 91.7 daily homicides recorded during 2024 with the 48.6 preliminarily reported between January and July 2026, which represents a decrease of 47 percent.

Regarding the distribution by state, seven states accounted for 49 percent of the intentional homicides recorded in the country between January and July 2026, according to the report presented by the agency’s head.

Guanajuato concentrated 8.6 percent of the national total, followed by Baja California, with 8.2 percent; Chihuahua, with 8.1 percent; Sinaloa, with 7.1 percent; the State of Mexico, with 6 percent; Guerrero, with 5.6 percent; and Morelos, with 5.5 percent.

However, comparing the first seven months of 2026 with the same period of 2025, 30 states recorded a decrease in their daily average of intentional homicides, according to the SESNSP. In percentage terms, the official highlighted the declines observed in San Luis Potosí, Nayarit, Quintana Roo, and Zacatecas.

Among the states with the highest concentration of homicides, Guanajuato went from an average of 12.7 daily cases in February 2025 to 3.1 in July of this year, a reduction of 76 percent.

In Baja California, the average went from 7.1 daily homicides in September 2024 to 3.7 in July 2026, a decrease of 48 percent; while in the State of Mexico it fell from 6.6 to 2.7 daily cases since the start of the current administration, equivalent to a reduction of 59 percent.

In Guerrero, the daily average dropped from 6.6 to 2.5 homicides between the beginning of the administration and July of this year, a reduction of 61 percent, according to the data presented.

For Morelos, the official explained that the average remained relatively stable during the first 20 months of the administration, but fell from 4.3 to 2.1 daily homicides since the implementation of the Morelos Plan three months ago, which represents a decrease of 51 percent.

In Sinaloa, where the official attributed the increase in violence recorded since September 2024 to a dispute between organized crime groups, the average went from 6.9 daily homicides in June 2025—when it reached its highest point—to 3.3 in July 2026.

This represents a reduction of 52 percent, while July became the second month with the lowest daily homicide average in the state over the past year.

Likewise, the head of the SESNSP reported the downward trend that also appeared in high-impact crimes, whose daily average fell 33 percent between October 2024 and July 2026.

She detailed that in October 2024 an average of 636.6 high-impact crimes per day were recorded nationally, while in July of this year the figure stood at 424.4 cases, the lowest monthly level of the last 22 months analyzed.

In particular, vehicle theft with violence recorded a decrease of 54 percent between September 2024 and July 2026. This past month also posted the lowest daily average for this crime since the beginning of the current administration.

Comparing the first seven months of 2026 with the same period of 2025, the SESNSP reported reductions in the various high-impact crimes included in the report.

In addition, there was a reduction in the crime of femicide, which fell 7.7 percent; intentional injuries from firearm discharge, 11.4 percent; kidnapping, 28.2 percent; and total robberies with violence, 15.9 percent.
