August 10 marks the first anniversary of the assassination of prominent Palestinian journalist Anas al-Sharif.

Al-Sharif, alongside five other Palestinian journalists, was killed on August 10, 2025, when Israeli warplanes targeted their tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Western Gaza city.

Israel claimed that the six slain journalists were combatants affiliated with Palestinian resistance groups. A pretext that it has long used to justify killings of journalists.

Al-Sharif was exceptional in documenting one of the most cruel genocides in modern history, driven by his unparalleled devotion to his people, his dedication to delivering the truth, his steadfastness and defiance, despite repeated threats of assassination by Israel.

Working in the most dangerous war zones for journalists in the world, Anas did not surrender even after his father was killed in an Israeli airstrike that also demolished his family’s house. Nor did the prolonged starvation defeat his determination.

“I have lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification,” Anas wrote in his last will.

Anas al-Sharif: the iconic journalist

Anas al-Sharif, a father of two, became an icon not only because of his professional journalistic work and unmatched bravery, but also because of the deeply human moments captured on camera, showing him weeping over the suffering of his people.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, such as the prominent Dr. Abu Safiya, cut off from the outside world and unaware of al-Sharif’s assassination, sent pleas to the late journalist asking him “to remind the world about our cause and our suffering.”

Anas al-Sharif was one of over 270 Palestinian journalists killed by Israel in less than three years. This happened in full view of the international community, and with unwavering US support for the Israeli war machine.

Israel also killed dozens of other journalists across the West Asia region over the same period, including in Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran.

Although Israeli fighter jets ended Anas al-Sharif’s life, they could not silence his voice, which has inspired many journalists to follow his path and continue to speak up fearlessly for their people.
