The Russian Embassy in Helsinki announced this Tuesday that Moscow will adopt measures to protect its security in response to the increased NATO military presence in Finland, describing the deployment as a factor of tension in the Nordic region.
In statements to the Russian newspaper Izvestia, the diplomatic mission indicated that the actions of allied countries reflect the advancement of NATO plans to expand its capabilities on Finnish territory. According to Moscow, this situation demonstrates a confrontational orientation toward Russia.

The Russian mission classified the military strengthening of the alliance in Finland as a destabilizing element contributing to the deterioration of the regional security scenario. The embassy recalled that it has repeatedly warned about the possible consequences of this policy and assured that it will respond with the necessary measures to guarantee its defense.
The diplomatic representation stated that it expects the Finnish authorities to have taken into account the warnings issued by Moscow. However, it maintained that so far Helsinki has shown no willingness to establish a dialogue that would allow addressing the concerns raised by Russia.
The embassy stressed that, after Finland’s accession to NATO, decisions related to the country’s security no longer depend solely on the Finnish government, given the role played by the Atlantic alliance in this sphere.

Strategic Baltic Region
For his part, the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe, U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich, noted that the area comprising Finland and Sweden constitutes a strategic zone of great relevance for the organization due to its location on the alliance’s northeastern flank.
The incorporation of both countries into the NATO structure has increased military interest in the Baltic Sea, a key region for Russia due to its proximity to maritime routes linked to Saint Petersburg and the Kaliningrad enclave.
Beyond Finland, NATO maintains a military presence in other countries of the eastern European flank, including Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
The Russian announcement comes amid growing friction between Moscow and the Atlantic alliance since the Nordic country formally joined the organization in 2023, ending decades of military non-alignment. The Kremlin has repeatedly condemned the enlargement of NATO toward its borders, considering it a direct threat to its national security.
The Russian Embassy’s statements reflect the hardening of the Russian position, which maintains that the security architecture in the region cannot ignore the legitimate interests of all actors involved. Moscow insists that the absence of a constructive dialogue with Helsinki and its allies will only deepen the existing tensions in a scenario marked by growing militarization.
The measures announced by the Russian diplomatic mission remain unspecified, but the Kremlin has previously warned that it could adjust its military posture in the northwestern direction, including the reinforcement of its air defenses and naval capabilities in the Baltic theater.
