On Tuesday, Nicaraguan government announced that it will install a sculpture in honor of former Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz, commemorating the centennial of his birth (1926-2026). The announcement was made by Co-President Rosario Murillo through official media outlets.

Cuba Opens International Colloquium Honoring Fidel Castro’s Legacy
The 13-meter-high monument consists of a full-body metal figure of the Cuban leader, surrounded by colorful metallic tree silhouettes. The structure will be located on the “From Bolívar to Chávez” promenade, formerly Bolívar Avenue, which runs north to south through the area known as “Old Managua.”
The sculpture will be installed in an amusement park next to the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit building, across from the National Assembly.
Murillo stated that this is a work being installed with great honor and pride on the “From Bolívar to Chávez” Avenue, honoring the leader of our American and Caribbean revolution, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz, who was with us, who visited Nicaragua, and who inspired the revolutionary struggles, inspired and supported our people.
The inauguration is part of a series of tributes to Fidel Castro in Nicaragua, which will include activities at universities and in different municipalities throughout the country.

The text reads, “Just 23 days after the triumph of the Sandinista Revolution, the first Cuban medical brigade arrived in Nicaragua to rebuild a health system devastated by war and neglect, marking the beginning of decades of historic solidarity between the two peoples.”
Cuba pays tribute to the Commander
Meanwhile, in Cuba, the centennial of the revolutionary leader is being commemorated with a week of cultural programming throughout the country. August 13 will be the central date, when music, dance, theater, visual arts, and literature will come together in a nationwide celebration.
The 34th Havana International Book Fair will be held at the Cultural Station on Línea and 18th Streets, with the Russian Federation as the guest country. The writers honored will be Marilyn Bobes and José Bell Lara. During the week, the National Literature Prize, the National Social Sciences Prize, the National Publishing Prize, and the Calendario, Nicolás Guillén, and Alejo Carpentier Prizes will be awarded.
On Tuesday the 11th, pianist Frank Fernández and the National Symphony Orchestra will give a concert at the National Theater. That same day, a photographic exhibition of the Commander-in-Chief will open at the José Martí Memorial, organized by the Fototeca de Cuba.
Meanwhile, on Thursday the 13th, Rueda de Casino performances will take place throughout the country starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Cuba Pavilion, in addition to the cantata “100 Years with Fidel” at the Joseíto Fernández Cultural Center and the Unrestricted Trova event at the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, (UNEAC in spanish), featuring Silvio Alejandro and Annie Garcés.
On Sunday the 16th, the National Ballet of Cuba, under the direction of Viengsay Valdés, will present a gala tribute at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater at 5:00 p.m. That same day, the Book Fair will conclude at 2:00 p.m.
Other provinces and communities throughout the country will also hold celebrations. On Wednesday the 12th, the 34th anniversary of the Korimakao Community Artistic Ensemble will be commemorated with the colloquium “Sowing, Sustaining, Transcending.” On Saturday the 15th, the National Folkloric Ensemble will present a special program at the Palenque del Saturday Rumba Arena.
Meanwhile, Artemisa will celebrate the Artemisa Mestiza Traditions Festival; Matanzas will host the “Fidelísimo” event; and Villa Clara will award prizes for the Fidel in My Heart children’s art contest on August 13th in Santa Clara. The National Rosehip Festival 2026 will take place from the 11th to the 13th throughout the country.
The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC in spanish) will present a showcase of Russian films at the Yara and La Rampa cinemas throughout the week. Restored ICAIC Latin American newsreels, which glorify Fidel Castro, will be screened before each feature film at the Yara, Chaplin, and Multicine Infanta cinemas
