On Monday, Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella adopted an unprecedented position in his country’s diplomacy, declaring that the Golan Heights are fundamental to the “defense” of the Zionist state.
The Golan Heights plateau is a water-rich area that overlooks the Galilee region and the Sea of Galilee on the Israeli-controlled side and the road to Damascus on the Syrian side.
During the Six-Day War in 1976, Israel took control of the territory in an act that has been denounced by the international community as illegitimate. So far, only two countries recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights: the United States and Colombia.

The following is the statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry:
“The Syrian Arab Republic strongly condemns the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia on Aug. 10, 2026, which included recognition of what it termed ‘Israeli sovereignty’ over the occupied Syrian Golan, based on security pretexts that are inconsistent with the provisions of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Syrian Arab Republic expresses its categorical rejection and condemnation of this position and affirms that the Golan is an inseparable part of its territory.
The statement by the Colombian government constitutes a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations, of the statements by the Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres, in which he affirmed that the Golan is Syrian territory and that the United Nations unreservedly recognizes it as part of Syria, of the principle of the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by force, and of Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981.
Syria also appreciates the growing international support for its legitimate rights in the occupied Syrian Golan. The number of States supporting the U.N. General Assembly resolution entitled ‘The Syrian Golan’ rose from 97 States in 2024 to 123 States in 2025, reflecting continued international support for Syria’s right to recover its occupied territory and the rejection of the entrenchment of the occupation or recognition of its consequences.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates reaffirms its categorical rejection of the continued Israeli attacks and incursions into Syrian territory and calls on all States and international organizations to shoulder their responsibilities in respecting international law and United Nations resolutions.
It further affirms that it will continue to use all legitimate diplomatic and legal means to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and established rights, and to work toward the recovery of its occupied territories.”
