Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday a doubling of her administration’s target for upper secondary education spaces, raising the goal to 400,000 new slots nationwide, as she inaugurated an agricultural baccalaureate center (CBTA) in Texcoco.

The inaugurated campus is part of the Comprehensive Eastern Zone Plan, which covers 11 municipalities in the State of Mexico and aims to establish at least one high school and one university in each of those municipalities. Sheinbaum cited the need to address surging demand and prevent students from falling behind due to a lack of nearby schools.

Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, Jesús Esteva, detailed that the facility required an investment of 50 million pesos, with construction running from June 2025 to April of this year. Esteva provided these specifics following a chant of “teachers with Claudia” from educators present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The CBTA currently spans over 3,000 square meters, housing 12 classrooms, laboratories, and administrative areas. A second phase covering 2,500 additional square meters is under construction and will be dedicated to agricultural, dairy, poultry, and swine production.

Sheinbaum emphasized that many youths lack access to high schools near their homes, insisting that young people must remain in school, which is why the administration is building so many new campuses. The event was attended by Governor of the State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez Álvarez.
