At least thirteen people died and several remain missing after a new attack attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, a militia linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The incursion took place on Thursday night in the village of Banana École, about twenty kilometers from Mambasa in Ituri province, where ADF members attacked the population and set fire to homes, businesses, two trucks, and three motorcycles before withdrawing, local media reported this Saturday.

Representatives of the local civil society of Mambasa denounced that they had alerted the security forces earlier in the week about the presence of the armed group in the area without effective preventive measures being adopted, for which they demanded logistical and troop reinforcement for the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC).

Likewise, they urged intensifying the operations of the coalition formed by the Congolese Army, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), and the UN mission in the country (Monusco) to neutralize the rebels and allow the return of displaced persons.

For its part, the territorial administration assured that military actions are being developed to contain insecurity and restore order in the Mambasa territory.

The ADF, a Ugandan-origin militia that frequently launches attacks in the Congolese provinces of North Kivu and Ituri (east), has been identified since March 2021 by the United States as a terrorist organization affiliated with the jihadist group.

Ugandan authorities also accuse the group of organizing incursions into their territory and, in November 2021, the armies of Uganda and the DRC began a joint military operation that has not stopped the hostilities.

Since 1998, the east of the DRC has been embroiled in a conflict between more than a hundred rebel groups and the Army, despite the presence of the UN peacekeeping mission (Monusco).
