On Wednesday, Taiwan launched its annual 10-day Han Kuang military exercises – its largest war drills of the year – rehearsing for war with mainland China. This year with over 20,000 troops, including around 5,000 reservists, are expected to take part. Under intense US pressure, leader of Taiwan Lai Ching-te has promised to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2030, and US President Donald Trump is expected to submit a US$14 billion Taiwan arms package to Congress soon. The drills run through August 14.
