Mexico City, August 7 (SinEmbargo).— Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported this Friday that the governments of Mexico and Peru agreed to resume diplomatic relations between the two nations as of today.

In a statement, the Mexican Foreign Ministry stressed that the decision to resume the diplomatic tie between the two nations was made “considering the historic bonds of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation that unite them.”

In addition, the governments of the two countries reaffirmed their respect for international law and for the principles established in the Charter of the United Nations.

For its part, the Peruvian foreign ministry shared a post on its official social media accounts to announce the resumption of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Peru.

Sheinbaum announces that Betsy Chávez will travel from Peru to Mexico.

During this Friday’s “people’s mañanera,” President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported that Betssy Chávez, Peru’s former Prime Minister, will arrive in Mexico this morning after being granted safe conduct.

It is a gesture of good will from President Fujimori’s government toward Mexico, and with this, relations with Peru will be restored, and we, as always, as we have done, will continue defending President Castillo.

The head of the Executive recalled that Betsy Chávez remained for several months as an asylee inside Mexico’s Embassy in Peru; however, after the diplomatic mission was closed following the rupture of relations, the former Peruvian official remained under the protection of the Government of Brazil.
