Proposal would require some foreign tenants to leave within six months.

On Friday, Britain’s Conservative Party pledged to end the allocation of social housing to foreigners in England, especially those from outside the European Union, if it comes to power after the 2029 general election.

The party, led by Kemi Badenoch, plans to cancel new social housing allocations for foreigners as well as existing allocations for couples in which neither partner is British, a move that would free up about 228,144 homes for U.K. citizens.

Tenants who no longer meet the requirements would have to leave the properties within six months. However, Irish citizens and European Union citizens would be exempt from the measure, provided the latter can prove they have “settled” status, equivalent to permanent residency.

An Initiative Nearly Identical to the Far Right.

The plan is part of the Tories’ goal of controlling immigration after their rivals on the right, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, also pledged to ban foreigners from living in these social housing properties and implement a plan to retroactively evict and deport those who already occupy one.

According to the Conservatives — who trail the Labour Party and Reform UK in the polls — the Labour government of British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has lost control of immigration and has allowed many British families to be pushed onto waiting lists for access to social housing.

Labour described the initiative as “unserious and unworkable, copied from Reform UK, which does nothing to address the housing crisis that the Conservatives themselves created,” Housing Minister Angela Rayner said.

Currently, foreigners with permanent residency, refugee status or specific humanitarian protections are eligible to apply for social housing, while asylum seekers are not entitled to it except in exceptional circumstances, such as cases of domestic violence.

These properties are managed by local councils or housing associations, and the rent is very low compared with high prices on the private market. Applicants must also demonstrate that they do not have the financial means to rent privately.

Waiting List of 1.3 Million Families

An estimated 1.34 million households are on waiting lists to obtain social housing. The high cost of housing has created problems in many communities where asylum seekers are housed in hotels or homes while their applications to live in the country are processed, although the government has set a goal of ending this model by 2029 and instead housing them in military barracks.

The latest incidents of violence related to the issue took place this week in the town of Thetford, in the county of Norfolk, in eastern England. Police have strengthened security in Thetford this week after several people attempted on Tuesday and Wednesday night to break into homes that reportedly house asylum seekers.

A crowd of more than 200 people threw eggs and stones at the homes while chanting slogans such as, “We want them to leave.”
