Prime Minister Says Academic Stress May Have Motivated Attack as Investigation Continues.
On Friday, a shooting at a school and a residence north of Bangkok left 30 people injured and eight dead, including the alleged gunman’s grandparents, teachers and the attacker.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that “academic stress” may have motivated the shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, which remains evacuated and under police protection.
The student who carried out the attack still had more than 30 rounds of ammunition and that had he not taken his own life, he could have injured many more people.
The firearm used was a compact pistol registered in the suspect’s grandfather’s name, Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee said.
“The attack also appears to have been carefully planned,” Anutin said, adding that “the reconstruction of the events suggests a clear sequence of actions and specific targets.”

Regarding the regulations governing civilian firearm ownership, the Prime Minister said that one of his “pending tasks is to enact the new firearms law,” which “is still in progress.”
The Debsirin Nonthaburi School has announced a temporary closure and the suspension of in-person classes until Aug. 17 to cooperate with the police investigation. The school belongs to one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious public school networks, attended by senior political officials.
Thailand has a high rate of civilian firearm ownership, and shootings are not unusual, with easy access to firearms for military and police personnel and lax, outdated regulations governing civilian firearm purchases.
