
Central Europe recorded unprecedented temperatures on Wednesday, as Slovakia and Austria registered historic heat marks, intensifying wildfires and triggering an energy crisis across the region.
Slovak meteorological authorities reported that the southern town of Kamenica nad Hronom reached 41.4 °C, surpassing its absolute maximum for the third time this summer. The pattern repeated on the Austrian border, where the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg station recorded a peak of 41.2 °C, consolidating an unusual heat wave that had already broken previous records in the Czech Republic and Hungary.
The sustained rise in thermometers also drove the warmest night in southwestern Slovakia, with minimum temperatures that did not drop below 28.4 °C in Skalica. According to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European continent is experiencing a warming rate that doubles the global average since the 1980s.

Prolonged aridity and extreme temperatures keep the region under conditions of environmental vulnerability, causing large-scale forest fires and forcing the preventive displacement of thousands of families in several affected localities. The heat wave has placed pressure on emergency services, agricultural production and water reserves, while authorities across the region issued warnings to vulnerable populations.
Climate scientists note that the repetition of absolute records within a single summer indicates that European weather systems are adapting to a new baseline of extreme conditions. In parallel, the decrease in the flow of major European rivers caused by the extreme heat reduced hydroelectric and nuclear power generation in several European Union countries. The lack of sufficient water for cooling forced Hungary to halt its only nuclear plant and request consumption cuts from the population, while Romania conducted blasting operations in the Danube to build a temporary dam.
Austrian hydroelectric production declined by 30 % compared to usual levels. In France, a country highly dependent on atomic energy, drought and rising temperatures in river flows forced the shutdown of three reactors and the programmed reduction of power in another four to avoid affecting ecosystems.
This energy crisis over the region’s infrastructure pushed several nations to resort to coal-fired plants in Germany, contradicting the decarbonization targets set by Brussels for 2050. The Copernicus Climate Change Service warned that accelerated aridity in western, central and eastern Europe consolidates low-water periods -the seasons when rivers, lakes and lagoons reach their lowest flow or level- as more prolonged, generating a constant threat to the continent’s energy supply.
