US inspectors were pulled from Michoacán over threats; Sheinbaum is sending more National Guard and pitching a work plan to restart avocado exports.

Mexico City. Mexico requested that the United States embassy hold a meeting as soon as possible with the Department of Agriculture and that country’s inspection areas, seeking to resume, also immediately, avocado exports, following the suspension due to a security alert related to threats against US interests and officials in Michoacán.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported this, saying that yesterday she met “with the most important association of avocado business owners in Michoacán” to draw up a work plan, which -she trusted- will be accepted by the Americans. It includes inspection.

At her press conference, she said she instructed the secretaries of Foreign Relations, Roberto Velasco; of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch; as well as of Agriculture and Rural Development, Columba López, to request the meeting, while security in Michoacán will be strengthened with a greater presence of the National Guard.

She trusted that exports would resume soon. “It has happened on other occasions, it is not the first time, and we hope it resumes very soon. That is why there is dialogue and, at the same time, the strengthening of security in certain areas where there was not as much presence of the Guard.”

The President assured that if the suspension is for a short time “it will not have significant effects, and that is what we are seeking, for it to be a short time so as to recover the exports, and there is a very good action plan, so we believe it will be accepted and that very soon all activity will recover.”

She guaranteed that there will be more security “in certain areas where there was not as much presence of the National Guard. Remember that we sent a great deal to Uruapan; well, the general (Ricardo Trevilla, head of the Secretariat of National Defense) sent both National Guard and Army troops.”

In addition, she maintained, “there have been several very important arrests, but there is another important area where they are asking us to also have a presence of the Guard. So we are going to send it, and the dialogue with the embassy and the United States to be able to recover avocado exports as soon as possible.”
