More Than 150 Delegates From 25 Countries Gather in Havana to Advance a Unified Agenda.
On Thursday, the 4th Continental Assembly of ALBA Movements opened its sessions at the University of Havana with the participation of more than 150 delegates from 25 countries.

From Aug. 6 to 9, participants will seek to reaffirm popular unity as a key tool for confronting the neoliberal offensive, analyze the decline of U.S. hegemony amid global geopolitical trends, and develop a continental work plan to establish a unified agenda of struggle.
Present at the opening ceremony were President Miguel Diaz-Canel, Roberto Morales Ojeda, secretary of organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.
The ALBA Movements assembly was convened under the slogan, “For Socialism, One Hundred Years Walking With Fidel,” and is dedicated to the centennial of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
By selecting Cuba as the host of its 4th Continental Assembly, ALBA Movements seeks to demonstrate its solidarity with the Caribbean nation and reject the U.S. economic war that has affected millions of Cubans every day for more than six decades.
“Holding the meeting on the island is a recognition of the dignity and resistance of the Cuban Revolution, considered the first socialist revolution on the continent. Defending Cuba means defending the future of Our America and the possibility of building an alternative project to capitalism,” ALBA Movements activist Laura Capote said.
Earlier, on Aug. 3 and 4, the political coordinating committee of ALBA Movements held a meeting at the Martin Luther King Memorial Center in Havana.
“For ALBA Movements, solidarity with the Cuban people and the Cuban revolutionary process is a fundamental pillar. Therefore, it was a unanimous decision to hold this working meeting here in Cuba, even in the face of the adverse conditions we are experiencing,” said Joel Suarez, a member of the Martin Luther King Memorial Center, a Cuban Christian-inspired ecumenical organization that promotes emancipatory values.

An Organization That Began Taking Shape in 2007
ALBA Movements is an international platform that brings together hundreds of social organizations, grassroots movements, labor unions, Indigenous groups, peasant organizations, feminist collectives, youth organizations and political activists from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The network was launched in 2007 as a space for coordination among popular movements inspired by the principles of solidarity, anti-imperialism, social justice and regional integration.
Although it shares ideological affinities with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), it operates independently as a coalition of civil society organizations rather than as an intergovernmental body.
ALBA Movements holds periodic continental and international assemblies to coordinate campaigns and adopt joint political positions on issues including economic sovereignty, opposition to sanctions, environmental protection, labor rights, gender equality, migration and the defense of Indigenous peoples.
It has also organized solidarity brigades, educational initiatives and international campaigns in support of countries and causes it considers to be resisting foreign intervention or economic pressure.
ALBA Movements has remained active in supporting Latin American progressive governments and political movements while criticizing U.S. foreign policy, economic sanctions and multinational corporations. The platform has participated in international forums and coordinated actions on issues ranging from climate change and food sovereignty to peace initiatives and opposition to military intervention.
