Fuel shortages in Cuba worsened after the oil blockade imposed by Trump in January.
On Tuesday, the United Nations Office of the Secretary-General confirmed it is working with several countries interested in sending fuel to Cuba for humanitarian reasons.

UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq explained that the goal is to ensure Cuba has the necessary fuel to meet humanitarian needs, although he did not specify which countries are participating or any concrete progress.
Fuel shortages in Cuba worsened after the oil blockade imposed by the United States in January 2026, which only had one exception: the Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin, carrying 730,000 barrels of fuel, in March.
Haq expressed the United Nations’ concern about the serious energy problems affecting electricity, sanitation, the economy, and logistics. He noted that limited progress had been made in previous months with small quantities of fuel.

UN Resident Coordinator in Cuba Francisco Pichon indicated that negotiations are underway with the U.S. to obtain fuel and mobilize stored humanitarian aid, although a solution has not yet been reached.
he acknowledged that small quantities have been acquired through the private sector, which allowed for the movement of aid containers, but insisted that broader action is required to implement the action plan.
Meanwhile, the Cuban Electric Union (UNE) reported that, due to technical problems stemming from outages in the National Electric System, electricity bill payments have been suspended until Thursday.
