Kremlin reshuffles military leadership as Ukrainian attacks continue against Russian territory and infrastructure.
On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin strengthened the defense of Russia’s rear areas and its drone forces by placing two generals in command of both branches.

Since Aug. 1, about 30 Russian civilians have died in Ukrainian drone, missile, and artillery attacks, as well as in a bombing in Moscow targeting a senior military commander.
As a result, Putin convened an extraordinary meeting at the Kremlin, where he met with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Defense Minister Andrei Belousov.
The Russian president announced the creation of a new rear defense service because Ukrainian drones have struck throughout European Russia, from the Baltic to the Ural Mountains.
“Under the current conditions, this is also combat work, entirely combat work,” Putin said, explaining that the decision responds to a proposal by Belousov to “place all rear services under a single command.”
The new head of Russia’s rear defense will be Col. Gen. Valery Solodchuk, who until now commanded the Center military grouping, which is responsible for the liberation of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

On Wednesday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced plans to strengthen air defenses around the capital, which has been targeted by two-thirds of the drones Ukraine launches daily against Russian territory.
Putin also announced that the new Unmanned Systems Forces will be headed by Col. Gen. Denis Liamin, who until now served as chief of staff of the Central Military District.
“This new branch of the armed forces is still being created. I want to express my hope that you, as one of the most qualified specialists, will successfully complete its formation,” the Russian leader said.
Putin also appointed Col. Gen. Andrei Ivanayev as the new commander of the Center grouping and Lt. Gen. Pyotr Bolgarev as the new commander of the Vostok military grouping.

On June 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky launched an intensive campaign of attacks against Russia’s rear areas that was to last for 40 days.
During that period, the Ukrainian military attacked about 20 logistics centers belonging to the company Wildberries, 25 refineries and energy infrastructure facilities, and approximately 200 oil tankers and merchant vessels in the Black and Azov seas.
In response, during July, Russia launched 381 missiles, more than in any other month since the start of the special military operation in February 2022.
Among the most recent victims of the Ukrainian terrorism is Vladimir Tkachuk, director of the company Uraldronzavod, which specializes in the production of Upir FPV kamikaze drones. He is currently in critical condition after being the victim of a bombing.
