The U.S. Army has depleted nearly 80% of its interceptors for a key missile defense system, with senior military commanders warning that Pentagon ammunition reserves are “dangerously low,” local media reported Tuesday.
Almost four-fifths of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) inventory and roughly half of Patriot interceptor stocks have been consumed since the war with Iran began on February 28, according to the investigation. Before the conflict, the United States possessed approximately 2,200 Patriot missiles across its two most modernized variants and 452 THAAD missiles, per the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which noted that THAAD is designed to protect wide areas from enemy ballistic missiles.

Concerns over the financial toll of the Iran war have surfaced previously. In March, Pentagon alarm emerged over excessive Tomahawk missile usage, with more than 850 fired in the conflict’s early weeks, highlighting a shortage of that weapon system.
The war of aggression has now stretched beyond five months and ranks among President Donald Trump’s administration foremost concerns. After multiple failed attempts to secure an agreement with Iran, Trump on Monday characterized the current negotiations as Tehran’s “last opportunity” to finalize a favorable deal ending the conflict, speaking to journalists in the Oval Office.
Media reports say the US has used nearly all of its global stockpile of long-range precision missiles during the war on Iran, including ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles.

Dialogue is occurring at Iran’s request and with backing from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and others, all of whom supported giving the process a final chance, according to Trump’s words.
Despite a June 17 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran to conclude the war and initiate a two-month peace process, cross-border attacks resumed, prompting Tehran to declare the Strait of Hormuz closed and Trump to reimpose a naval blockade off Iran’s coasts.
