Cuba and Grenada signed two agreements in Saint George on Tuesday in the areas of special education and a literacy program, aiming to expand bilateral cooperation.

The signatories representing both governments highlighted that the accords open new perspectives for joint projects, encompassing both teacher training and the application of teaching methodologies already proven in Cuba and other Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Grenada’s Ministry of Education permanent secretaries, Lorraine St. Louis Nedd and Elvis Morain, underscored the importance of the agreements for addressing specific population needs and guaranteeing inclusive learning opportunities. Ambassador Yadirys Echenique Paz underscored that these initiatives are part of Cuba’s solidarity vocation and its commitment to human development in Grenada, according to the Prensa Latina news agency, which also recalled existing Cuban collaboration in the training of young professionals in Grenada.

The Cuban literacy program “Yo sí puedo” (Yes, I Can) to be implemented in Grenada was created by pedagogue Leonela Relys and is designed to teach young people and adults to read and write in a few weeks. Since its inception in 2001, it has been deployed in 30 countries across Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Oceania, and Europe.

Last year, Honduras was declared a territory free of illiteracy, thanks to the joint efforts of Honduran entities and the “Yo, sí puedo” program.
