The threat is not Cuba: it is the sanctions and the policies of war.

We recently saw the publication of a 99-page State Department report, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st-Century Communism,” which once again prioritizes a policy of confrontation, with a Monroe Doctrine-inspired view of U.S.-Cuba relations. The central theme of this document is to try to convince its readers that Cuba represents a threat to the United States.

Once again, we have seen reflected in this document the policies of the 1950s in the United States, promoted by Joseph McCarthy, characterized by the persecution and harassment of pacifist movements and mainstream dissidents. This policy, applied for several decades, served as the basis for guilt by association, as well as the use of fear surrounding the internal/external enemy thesis, something very commonly employed in various countries to justify the militarization of their territories.

To claim that internal mobilizations in the United States—from social movements, anti-racist groups, progressive organizations, university protests, and solidarity groups with Palestine, to pacifist movements opposing war—are the result of foreign interference is simply implausible.

This document fails to acknowledge the negative impact of the sanctions and blockade against Cuba, which has lasted for over 60 years and has subjected the country’s population to all kinds of shortages, depriving them of resources necessary for the very existence of the Cuban people. Recently, we have seen a new package of sanctions against solidarity organizations such as ICAP.

Nor is there any mention of the extensive history of threats of war and the promotion of military action against the country, all of which share a common factor: they have come solely from the United States. Similarly, the document makes no mention of the Guantanamo military base, which continues to be illegally occupied by the U.S. on Cuban territory against the will of its people.

We join our voices with the voices of hundreds of countries at the United Nations General Assembly, who continue to declare that the blockade is criminal and threatens the lives of millions of people, and with the voices of thousands of organizations around the world mobilizing in solidarity with Cuba.

Our pacifist commitment compels us to raise our voices so that war, death, and the suffering of millions of people do not determine the future of the Cuban people, but rather the possibility of building their future independently, without threats, and without violating their right to self-determination.

Let us stop this new crusade against a people who have offered humanity only solidarity and the defense of life. Let us reject all attempts to criminalize the voices that oppose the war and demand a future of peace, solidarity, and social justice.

La Amenaza No Es Cuba: Son Las Sanciones y La Políticas de Guerra

Recientemente hemos visto publicado un informe del Departamento de Estado de 99 páginas, llamado Cuba la capítal del Comunismo del Siglo XXI, donde una vez más se priviligia la política de confrontación, con una visión Monroista sobre las relaciones de EE.UU con Cuba, el tema central de este documento es intentar convencer a sus lectores de que Cuba representa una amenaza para Estados Unidos.

Una vez más hemos visto reflejado en este documento la política de los años 50 en Estados Unidos, promovida por Joseph McCarthy, caracterizada por la persecución y el hostigamiento a movimientos pacifistas y disidentes del main stream, esta política aplicada durante varias decadas sirvió de base para la culpabilidad por asociación, así como el uso del temor a la tesis del enemigo interno/externo, algo muy comúnmente empleado en varios países para justificar la militarización de los territorios.

Pretender señalar que las movilizaciones internas en Estados Unidos, desde movimientos sociales, colectivos antirascistas, organizaciones progresistas, protestas universitarias, colectivos de solidaridad con Palestina, hasta movimientos pacifistas que se oponen a la guerra, son el resultado de la injerencia de una potencia extranjera, resulta simplemente inverosímil.

En este documento no existe un reconocimiento del impacto negativo de las sanciones y el bloqueo contra Cuba que ya lleva más de 60 años y que ha sometido a carencias de todo tipo a la población del país, privándolo de recursos necesarios para la propia existencia del pueblo cubano, recientemente hemos visto un nuevo paquete de sanciones contra organizaciones de la solidaridad cómo el ICAP.

Tampoco se hace mención a la extensa historia de amenazas de guerra y de promoción a las acciones militares contra el país, todas ellas con un factor en común, han venido solamente de Estados Unidos, de igual forma no se menciona la base militar de Guantánamo que sigue siendo ocupada ilegalmente por EE.UU en territorio cubano contra la voluntad de su población.

Unimos nuestra voz a la voz de centenares de países que en la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas, siguen diciendo que el bloqueo es criminal y atenta contra la vida de millones de personas, también a la voz de miles de organizaciones que alrededor del mundo se movilizan en solidaridad con Cuba.

Nuestra vocación pacifista nos exige alzar nuestra voz para que no sea la guerra, ni la muerte, ni el sufrimiento de millones de personas lo que determine el futuro del pueblo cubano, sino la posibilidad de construir su futuro, con independencia, sin amenazas, y sin trasgredir el derecho a la autodeterminación.

Detengamos esta nueva cruzada contra un pueblo, que sólo ha brindado a la humanidad, solidaridad y defensa de la vida, rechacemos todo intento de criminilazación de las voces que se oponen a la guerra y que reclaman un futuro de paz, de solidaridad y de justicia social.
