Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem on Tuesday again criticized and called for the suspension of peace negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, shortly before the start of a new round of talks in Rome, while vowing that his group “will continue the resistance” to liberate villages occupied by the Zionist army in southern Lebanon.

Qassem asserted that all direct negotiations have only brought Lebanon “shame, humiliation, disappointment, and successive concessions,” and argued that the dialogue “only benefits Israel.” He further noted that Israel has obtained political advantages from the framework agreement signed with Lebanon under U.S. mediation, but insisted that it will not achieve any results on the ground as long as the resistance and the Lebanese people remain firm against the Israeli project.

The Hezbollah leader harshly criticized the Lebanese government, accusing it of “supporting Israel instead of defending Lebanese sovereignty.” He also blamed President Joseph Aoun for not acting to “unify” the Lebanese, but rather acting as “a partisan and divisive figure,” which he deemed “totally incompatible with his role.”

Israel and Lebanon are holding a new round of talks from Tuesday through Thursday in Rome, led by the United States. The objective is to advance the implementation of the security framework signed in June, consolidate the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, and deploy the Lebanese Army in their place.
