On Monday, military sources and the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that armed men kidnapped and murdered Swiss geologist Luca Maggini and a Central African soldier in Bangui.

The Central African Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the events in a statement, indicating that the kidnapping occurred on Tuesday, July 30, and that a judicial investigation has been opened to identify those responsible.
Sergeant Ernest Kossingou reported that they were alerted to the kidnapping on Friday afternoon and deployed troops to the area, near the second residence of President Faustin-Archange Touadera.
The bodies were found on Saturday by farmers after a confrontation with the kidnappers, identified as a local bandit group operating in that region of northern Central African Republic.

Another geologist on the expedition, Frederic Pounou, corroborated the kidnapping and murder, while Jonas Agbembi, representative of the Central African League for Human Rights (LCDH), called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances.
The Swiss geologist worked for the UAE-based mining company ADMOG Gold, overseeing and improving production at two gold mines in the area.
The Central African Republic has suffered systemic violence since 2012, when the Seleka rebel coalition seized Bangui and ousted former president François Bozize, igniting a civil war that has left thousands dead and displaced.
