“I follow with concern the alarming situation in Ceuta, asking God, through the intercession of Our Lady of Africa, that solutions of peace, stability and justice may be found,” said the pontiff.

This has been Leo XIV’s first reaction to the migration crisis that occurred this week in Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city located in North Africa where last Thursday there was a massive entry of tens of thousands of people from Morocco and where 71 migrants have lost their lives.

Although the majority, some 73,5000 according to police estimates, have returned to Morocco, this crisis has revived the debate within the European Union regarding the migration problem and the Union’s borders.

In fact, next Tuesday the interior ministers of the member countries will hold an emergency meeting to analyze the situation in Ceuta.

Concern for the drama of migration has been a constant of Leo XIV throughout his pontificate, in which he has advocated for a response to this problem focused on human dignity and has also defended that no nation can face this challenge alone.

In his recent trip to Spain, last June, the pope stressed these messages in the Canary Islands stage where he met with migrants and humanitarian organizations, among others.
