US President Donald Trump reiterated his recognition of Rabat’s “sovereignty” over Western Sahara and highlighted his interest in contributing to the economic development of Morocco and the former Spanish colony, with special attention to strategic sectors such as energy and AI, according to a statement from the Moroccan Royal Cabinet.

The release of the statement coincides with an unprecedented migratory crisis between Morocco and Spain after the entry of some 60,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, a tragedy on which Morocco has so far maintained total secrecy and which, according to Spanish sources, has caused at least 67 deaths.

“The United States is clear: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support the serious, credible, and realistic Moroccan autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution,” says the statement, sent by Trump to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of his enthronement.

“Any other path prolongs the status quo and is unacceptable… This conflict must end now and the United States will continue to drive progress towards this goal,” the message continues.

Trump emphasizes the “valuable partnership” of the US with Morocco after its “crucial role” in the Abraham Accords. “To this end, we also work together to ensure the security of the Sahel region,” he adds.

The US president insists on his willingness to work “for economic and social development with Morocco, including in the territory of Western Sahara.”

“Reliable American technology and innovation will continue to serve as partners (of Morocco),” he adds, “in all strategic sectors, particularly energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense.”

Rabat and Washington have been experiencing a diplomatic honeymoon since Morocco normalized its relations with Israel in 2020 in exchange for the United States recognizing its sovereignty over Western Sahara.
