“Sean Grayson should be allowed out of prison when my daughter can get up from that cemetery.” Former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson was unanimously denied medical release by the Illinois Prisoner Review Board on Friday. Just six months ago, Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting and killing 36-year-old Sonya Massey in her kitchen. Massey’s mother addressed supporters ahead of the hearing: “Every day a Black person gets killed, pulled over, or beat down – young women, Black women, people of childbearing age. It’s like they’re trying to get rid of us.” Grayson, who has stage 4 cancer, filed for compassionate release after serving less than a year of his sentence.
