Cordeiro considers the sale ‘detrimental’ to football.
On Friday, Carlos Cordeiro, FIFA’s senior advisor and right-hand man to its president, Gianni Infantino, announced his immediate resignation after rejecting the proposal to sell World Cup participation.

The executive explained that he did not participate in the initiative and that he considers the sale “detrimental” to football, member associations, and the long-term future of the sport.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) declared that its national federations will not participate in FIFA competitions, joining the opposition of confederations from Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia.
The project envisions selling a 20% stake in FIFA Forward Enterprise to private investors, subject to approval by a majority of FIFA’s 211 member associations worldwide.

Cordeiro argued that FIFA already has extraordinary financial resources and can support football’s development without external capital, rejecting the justification for raising US$4.2 billion.
He denounced the sale of a permanent stake in football’s most valuable asset, claiming it would mortgage the sport’s future without offering a convincing reason for compromising its sustainability.
He also criticized the requirement for federations to decide on such a far-reaching issue in just 50 days, calling the process irresponsible for the future of world football.
Cordeiro asserted that FIFA’s responsibility is not to maximize commercial profits, but to protect and strengthen football for future generations, the central reason for his immediate resignation.
