In the Netherlands, right-wing parties are calling for sanctions and stricter measures from the EU.
On Friday, Geert Wilders, the leader of the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), called for Spain to be expelled from the Schengen Area and for the Netherlands to immediately close its borders following the attempted irregular entries into Ceuta from Morocco.

“Our borders must be closed NOW and Spain must be expelled from Schengen!” Wilders wrote on social media, accusing “the crazy liberal left,” including the Spanish and Dutch governments, of allowing “everyone to enter.”
The far-right leader called for a plenary debate in Parliament to address the situation in Spain, its possible repercussions for the Netherlands and the measures that should be adopted.
In an initial reaction to Thursday’s events, Wilders described the situation in Ceuta as an “Islamic invasion,” writing on social media: “Stop them all. Send them all back. No more. No more Islam.”

Dutch Foreign Ministry Responds Cautiously
On Friday, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen said he “trusts” that Spain will do “what is necessary” to protect the European Union’s external border in Ceuta, while also urging Morocco to adopt “the appropriate measures” in response to the “concerning” situation.
He also said that he spoke this morning with his Spanish and Moroccan counterparts to discuss the situation, although he did not provide further details about those conversations, and welcomed the European Commission’s offer of support to Spain.
Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz of the right-wing liberal People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) said it was “necessary to act quickly and firmly” in response to the “unacceptable” situation in Ceuta. “We must secure and protect our borders. Standing by while illegal immigrants enter Europe is not an option,” she warned.

Right-Wing Liberals Call for Sanctions Against Morocco
Ruben Brekelmans, the former Dutch defense minister and current parliamentary leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), called for applying “maximum pressure” on Spain and Morocco to stop the “outrageous surge.”
He also argued that if Spain does not protect its borders, the Frontex agency should intervene and that “no instrument of pressure” should be ruled out, including a “practical” suspension of Spain’s participation in the Schengen Area.
Brekelmans argued that the European Union should impose sanctions on Morocco if the country does not want to “readmit all” of its citizens, and urged suspending its trade benefits if Rabat does not act with sufficient firmness.
Migration policy is a sensitive issue in the Netherlands. PM Rob Jetten’s minority government has advanced reforms to tighten the asylum system and strengthen immigration controls in a “strict but fair” manner, while conservative parties press for more restrictive measures and tighter border controls.
