Hundreds of people clashed with security forces in the early hours of Friday at border perimeters in Castillejos and Nador, Morocco, during attempts to force entry into the North African cities under Spanish jurisdiction of Ceuta and Melilla.

Initial pushes by Moroccan forces succeeded in driving the migrants back toward the Moroccan side of the Ceuta border, but the groups returned shortly afterward with larger numbers and resumed throwing stones, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas in response, said Spanish news agency EFE.

Visible material evidence at the scene included at least six burned vehicles and numerous stones scattered along the main road leading to the frontier with Ceuta.

Throughout the night, the arrival of people to the vicinity of the Ceuta border did not cease, with groups coming from various points across Morocco, and numerous individuals were observed sleeping on the street or on the grass near the crossing.

Separately, near the Beni Nsar border crossing in Nador, the Moroccan Association for Human Rights reported violent clashes between law enforcement and hundreds of young people—including many minors—who tried to access the Spanish city of Melilla both through the border fence and via the port.

The AMDH noted that authorities deployed a large security apparatus and that the resulting pursuits escalated into confrontations, leaving several auxiliary forces members and some young people injured, while a large number of individuals were detained.
