The Cuban Book Institute (ICL) announced Thursday that the Havana International Book Fair (FILH) will take place from August 10 to 16, offering some 1,300 new literary titles with Russia as guest of honor, after the event was originally postponed due to the extraordinary situation caused by the U.S. oil blockade against the island.

The fair had initially been scheduled for February, but organizers communicated at the time that it was put off because of the oil blockade imposed by the Trump administration since January.

Now proceeding with the August dates, the 34th edition will place more than two million copies of classic and contemporary authors, along with electronic titles, on the market, according to reports from local media.

Russia’s participation includes a broad selection of its literature and a cultural agenda that features a cinematographic showcase developed in coordination with the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry.

Beyond Russia, delegations are also expected from China, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, and Spain, among other nations, the organizers confirmed.

The event’s program will feature the presentation of the National Literature, Social Sciences, and Editing Awards; the Nicolás Guillén Poetry Prize; the Alejo Carpentier Prizes for essay, short story, and novel; the Calendario Awards from the Hermanos Saíz Association; and the La Puerta de Papel recognition awarded by the Territorial Editions System.

Colloquiums dedicated to Cuban writers Marilyn Bobes and José Bell Lara are also scheduled, along with a specialized social sciences colloquium and another focused on scientific-technical subjects.
