The following statement issued by the Press Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in response to the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, particularly the new initiative launched by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his recent visit to the island:
The KKE opposes any two-state logic for Cyprus, whether explicit or disguised.
"The statements made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, linking the resolution of the Cyprus issue to developments in the region—that is, to the expanding rivalries and wars—constitute not merely a ‘diplomatic’ form of blackmail aimed at pressuring the Cypriot people into accepting painful ‘solutions’, but also point to Cyprus becoming more actively involved in dangerous Euro-Atlantic plans.
The KKE opposes any two-state logic, whether explicit or disguised. What is required today is a coordinated struggle by the working class and the people for an independent Cyprus: one single state, not two; with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international legal personality; free from occupation forces and all foreign troops and military bases; without guarantor powers or foreign protectors; a common homeland for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, with the people themselves exercising sovereignty".
