The proposal would allow Americans to recover money obtained through government corruption.
On Thursday, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he will introduce legislation to create an anti-corruption office aimed at preventing presidents from benefiting as President Donald Trump is doing.

“In just 18 months, the Trump family has made more than US$4 billion by exploiting the influence of the presidency,” he alleged, lamenting that “the same corrupt practices Trump is using to pocket billions of dollars are also causing Americans to pay, on average, an additional US$3,100 a year because of the rising cost of living.”
For that reason, he introduced the legislation with two goals: First, to give Americans their money back. Second, to make sure no one can ever steal from them again.
“Just because Trump stole Americans’ money doesn’t mean it belongs to him. Americans deserve to get that money back,” Schumer pointed out.

“My bill will create a private right of action that will allow Americans to recover the money that Trump and his family have taken from them,” he added.
“Our bill would empower anyone, including a state attorney general acting on behalf of the people of that state, to file a lawsuit to recover money stolen from the public through government corruption,” he said.
Beyond returning money to Americans, the Democrat explained that his bill seeks to establish “the necessary safeguards to ensure that no president, this one or any other, can ever again turn public office into a private fortune.”
The office will have the authority to issue subpoenas, “giving it real investigative power, effective enforcement authority, and the ability to recover profits obtained unlawfully.”
The oversight body will be led by seven members — three Republicans, three Democrats and one independent — and Congress will not be able to cut its funding because the proposal establishes “a self-sustaining funding source similar to that of the Federal Reserve,” Schumer concluded.
