“An attempt by a Ukrainian Army drone carrying an explosive payload has been recorded. The drone was detected near the facilities used for transporting spent nuclear fuel containers,” the Zaporozhye plant management said.
“The explosive payload was defused in a timely manner. There were no casualties or damage,” they added, explaining that the destruction of the targeted facilities could lead to serious consequences.
“This would mean a disruption of the plant’s technological capabilities for handling spent nuclear fuel, which would significantly complicate routine operations and create additional risks for the safe operation of the facility,” the Zaporozhye authorities stated.
Public Relations Director Yevgenia Yashina said the Russian authorities would “without fail” inform inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stationed at the plant.
The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has not generated electricity since September 2022 because of periodic Ukrainian drone attacks. In mid-July, Rodion Miroshnik, Russia’s Ambassador-at-Large, warned that the killing of Zaporozhye NPP Chief Engineer pushes Europe closer to nuclear disaster.
“The targeted killing of the very specialists keeping Europe’s largest nuclear plant safe is a brazen bid to cripple the facility’s command chain, and it dramatically raises the odds of a radiological catastrophe,” the Russian diplomat said.
“Chief Engineer Alexander Yakovlev was killed on July 15 when a Ukrainian drone struck his car in Energodar, he died along with his driver. A third plant worker was wounded as well,” Sputnik reported.

Russian Forces Liberate Four Settlements
On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian Army liberated four settlements during the past 24 hours in the Donetsk, Kharkiv and Sumy regions. In the latter two regions, Russia is seeking to establish a security buffer zone.
“The North military group established control over the settlement of Yurchenkovo in the Kharkiv region, as well as the settlements of Mogritsia and Mala Slobidka in the Sumy region. The Center military group also liberated the settlement of Krasnoyarske in the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the Russian military command said.
Although Kiev has intensified its aerial attacks against Russia’s rear areas using drones and missiles, Russian troops have continued advancing on the ground in recent weeks.
