George Cottrell (Posh George) and Nigel Farage of Reform UK

Reform UK and Nigel Farage are facing questions over multiple, ongoing financial scandals right now. Several of them link to the aristocrat George Cottrell (a.k.a. ‘Posh George’).

Somehow, the details keep looking worse and worse for everyone involved:

New excl: George Cottrell transferred $2m to his mother days before her donations to Reform

Sources say Fiona Cottrell told bankers the transfers, received 24-72 hours before her donations to Reform, came from her sonhttps://t.co/dzzPw0cU10

Posh George is a convicted fraudster who’s involved in an offshore crypto gambling platform. The ongoing scandals linking him to Reform include:

Failure to disclose these benefits and donations could prove to be a real problem for Reform UK and Farage – especially as the foreign-based Posh George may not have been a permissible donor at the time. As the Guardian is now reporting:

His lawyers have said he is a permissible donor, despite living abroad, but have not explained how he meets the criteria or when he first met them.

The Guardianis also reporting that Cottrell sent his mother several lump sums immediately before she made donations to Reform. And this is where the issue of permissibility comes in. Because of Posh George wasn’t a permissible donor, of course it would make sense for him to donate via a proxy.

As the Guardianreported:

The convicted fraudster George Cottrell transferred a total of more than $2m to his mother, Fiona Cottrell, in the days before her 2024 donations to Reform UK, the Guardian understands.

Financial industry sources told the Guardian that Fiona received one deposit of $1.4m and two tranches of more than $300,000 each – money she attributed to having come from her son, George, when bankers asked about the deposits.

The transfers to Fiona Cottrell were all made 24-72 hours before she donated. In some instances she donated directly to Reform; in others she sent the money to Richard Tice’s Britain Means Business, which acted as “a fundraising vehicle for the political party”. Donating this latter way kept the donations off the books, as they weren’t disclosed to the Electoral Commission.

The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the matter.

How to Launder Money

Posh George famously authored a book titled How to Launder Money. And as commenter Chris Spencer has said:

For a guy that wrote a book called “how to launder money” I expected something a bit more sophisticated than get mummy to send it https://t.co/a1cEAz37g8

It seems that these Reform people aren’t as clever as they think they are. And we suspect that’s only going to become more apparent as these investigations develop.
