TORONTO – “Marcos Jr., mahiya ka naman.”

Filipino progressive groups and solidarity allies held a People’s State of the Nation Address (PSONA) in Toronto’s Little Manila in response to the administration’s State of the Nation Address. The groups called for the rejection of the Marcos regime, as well as the ongoing imperialist war and plunder.

“The Marcos family is a reflection of political dynasty families like the Dutertes who continue to enjoy their power and wealth while the vast majority of Filipinos suffer. BBM said nothing of the 62 million Filipinos struggling with incomes under P22,000 or Can$500 (Canadian dollar) monthly, while the richest 0.1 percent have over P17 million or almost Can$400,000 monthly,” said Kim Garcia, coordinator of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Toronto.

“Marcos Jr. mahiya ka naman!” Apol Apuntar of TAMA NA Coalition Toronto, a coalition against corruption. Apuntar criticized Marcos Jr.’s announcement of amnesty on estate taxes as the Marcos family has neither paid the billions of taxes they owe the Philippine government nor returned the wealth they plundered.

The groups also destroyed effigies of Marcos Jr., Vice President Sara Duterte, and Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. They also tore down cardboard images of US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as well as Marcos Jr.

The action symbolized the impact of US and Canadian imperialism, as well as Marcos Jr.’s subservience to foreign interests. (DAA)
