Survivors of state violence, victims’ relatives, and supporters marched through central Lima Tuesday as Keiko Fujimori was sworn into office as Peru’s next president. Fujimori’s campaign rival, leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez – who lost by less than 50,000 votes and has refused to recognize the result – joined hundreds of protesters at the capital march. Protesters carried signs with slogans like “Keiko, you will fail!” and “Fujimori never again!” – referencing Keiko’s father Alberto Fujimori, the former dictator whose government ordered death squad massacres and forcibly sterilized thousands of Indigenous women during his decade as president.
