On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected accusations from Argentine President Javier Milei, who claimed that Mexico participated in an alleged social media campaign against Argentina during the 2026 World Cup.

She called the claims false and asserted that her government does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. The Mexican president maintained that, on the contrary, her administration has been the target of attacks from various quarters, but insisted that Mexico does not respond in kind.
“Here there is indeed an orchestrated campaign against our government, but we don’t usually interfere with other countries,” she added. Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexican foreign policy is guided by the constitutional principle of non-intervention and the self-determination of peoples.

Milei, in an interview with Radio Mitre, claimed that the Brazilian government financed 25% of this alleged anti-Argentine campaign and that it had the backing of Mexico and the U.S. Democratic Party.
He linked the offensive to criticism circulating on social media regarding the Argentine national team’s performance in the World Cup and asserted that Argentina has become “an emblem of freedom,” which generates rejection from those who “hide behind the state.”
This episode adds to the diplomatic tension between Argentina and Brazil after Milei called President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a “thief” and criticized Judge Alexandre de Moraes, prompting Brazil to recall its ambassador from Buenos Aires for consultations.
