The Cuban delegation is looking to improve upon its achievements at San Salvador 2023.
On Sunday, at the Central American and Caribbean Games being carried out in Dominican Republic, Mexico solidified its lead in the medal count with a haul of gold medals in rowing, open-water swimming, taekwondo, and clay-pigeon shooting, reaching 16 gold, 15 silver, and 12 bronze medals for a total of 43.

Meanwhile, Cuba got mixed results, with notable advances in badminton and taekwondo, but also eliminations and defeats in other disciplines.
In badminton, the Cuban duo of Juan Carlos Bencomo and Erly Cabrera secured their place in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles tournament after defeating Venezuelans Ricardo Torres and Maria Rojas 21-10, 21-18 in just 23 minutes.
Also in badminton, Roberto Herrera and Juan Carlos Bencomo advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles by defeating Colombians Jeronimo Giraldo and Nicolas Morales in a hard-fought match that ended 21-18, 19-21, 21-14.
However, Cuban Erly Cabrera was eliminated in the round of 16 of the women’s individual tournament, falling to Jamaican Tahlia Richardson 21-15, 21-12. Cuba still has Taymara Oropesa in the competition, who advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Mexican Vanessa Villalobos.

In women’s softball, the Cuban team debuted with a 7-0 loss to the Virgin Islands in their first Group B game. In taekwondo, Marlyn Perez won the silver medal in the women’s -53 kg division after losing the final to Mexican Nadia Ferreira, the current Pan American champion.
These results add to the overall performance of the Cuban delegation, which is looking to improve upon its achievements at San Salvador 2023 (23 medals, including five gold). Cuba remains in contention for a podium finish, although Mexico and Colombia hold a comfortable lead in the medal count.
Mexico, with 16 gold medals, dominates disciplines such as rowing, open water swimming, taekwondo, and clay pigeon shooting, while Colombia has won medals in cycling, water skiing, figure skating, and women’s water polo.
In skeet shooting, Luis Gallardo and Gabriela Garza added more medals for Mexico, further solidifying their delegation’s lead in the medal count.
