The Cuban president rejects Washington’s allegations and calls for action to strengthen sovereignty.
On Sunday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel led the ceremony marking the 73rd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Cespedes barracks in 1953, an event that launched an insurgent movement culminating in the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

During his speech, he denounced a campaign by U.S. President Donald Trump against progressive movements around the world. To justify a new form of McCarthyism, Washington is fabricating narratives portraying Cuba as the alleged center of international communism, a strategy that also seeks to further tighten the economic blockade against the Caribbean nation.
Diaz-Canel accused the U.S. government of pursuing a policy of maximum pressure aimed at provoking social unrest, weakening the Cuban government and paving the way for the country’s political and economic takeover.
“They are looking for a new excuse to sustain their political genocide against Cuba,” he said before hundreds of people gathered in Pinar del Rio, where he concluded his speech with a call to defend sovereignty, strengthen the economy and preserve social justice.

“Compatriots, the call now is for action, not to wait, not to lament, not to settle, to think as a country, to seek alternatives with boldness and creativity, to safeguard every resource as if it were the last, to produce, to substitute imports, to develop our potential, and to trust in our own strength,” he said.
“Let every Cuban, in their workplace, in their field, in their workshop, in their school or in their neighborhood, be and feel like a protagonist of the transformation we owe ourselves in order to overcome this moment,” Diaz-Canel stressed.
The Cuban leader’s remarks came days after the State Department published the report, “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism.” Through the document, Washington accuses Havana of building networks of espionage, political influence and support for left-wing organizations in the U.S. and other countries. It also accused Cuba of backing an alleged wave of “left-wing terrorism” on U.S. territory.
Diaz-Canel rejected those accusations and said Trump intends to blame Cuba for protests led by U.S. social groups affected by inequality, immigration policy and the deterioration of their economic conditions.
