The number of people injured in the multiple hit-and-run in Berlin on LGBTI Pride Day in Berlin amounts to 29, an attack in which one person died and which the authorities consider an “Islamist attack”, announced this Sunday the German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt.

“We assume that there are 29 injured, some of them seriously,” said Dobrindt in a statement to the media in the Tiergarten, the large park in the center of Berlin where the LGBTI Pride Day after-party was held on Saturday and where the suspect, Abdul Ballout, drove a van to run over the event participants.

“Everything we see here indicates that we are facing an Islamist attack,” said the minister, who specified that the suspect is currently being sought, not only in Berlin, but also at borders, airports and train stations throughout the country.

Dobrindt stated that the suspect sought by the authorities, a German citizen of Lebanese origin born in 2005, not only ran over people in the park, but when he got out of the vehicle, he also attacked several people who were there with a bladed weapon.

“We are dealing with an alleged perpetrator who in the past had already drawn attention due to his criminal record, his radicalization and his belonging to the Islamist scene,” indicated the German Interior Minister.

His criminal activities and radicalization, according to Dobrindt, led to a “conviction in Berlin of one year and ten months in prison,” which was suspended against the criteria of the Prosecutor’s Office.

According to Dobrindt, the country’s authorities are focused on searching for the suspect and, also, the federal states have been instructed to review their security concepts for large public events planned for these dates.

“It cannot be ruled out that horrible acts of this type, these terrorist attacks, occur after there has been one. It is not typical but it cannot be ruled out,” the minister maintained.
