The Joint Forces of Sudan, an alliance of the Army and armed groups, claimed to have recaptured three towns and a strategic city in North Kordofan, in the center of the country, on Saturday. These areas were previously under the control of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The supervisor of the Joint Forces and governor of Darfur, Mini Arko Minawi, reported that the allied forces of the Army have “liberated” the second largest city in North Kordofan, Bara, as well as the towns of Umm Qirfa, Umm Sayala, and Jabrat al Sheij.

“What they have achieved today is not the end of the battle, but the beginning of a new phase of decisive action,” Minawi stated in a Facebook message.

Again, the strategic town of Barah, north of El Obeid in central Sudan 🇸🇩, is back in the Sudanese armed forces control

The areas were recovered after “precise and high-quality military operations that disorganized the militia’s ranks and subdued them,” the governor said, referring to the RSF.

He also assured that the paramilitaries suffered “great human and material losses, and their defenses collapsed before the advance” of the Joint Forces.

This advance is key for the Army as Bara is a strategic city because it connects Omdurman with Al Obeid – an area under paramilitary siege – and forms part of the axis towards Darfur.

Bara has been the scene of changes in control and serious abuses against civilians after the RSF took over the city on October 25, 2025. Following their entry, extrajudicial executions, looting, kidnappings, and the displacement of thousands of people towards Al Obeid and other nearby areas were reported.

North Kordofan has become a strategic front because it connects Khartoum and the center of the country with Darfur, and its capital, Al Obeid, is a key logistical and military hub.

The capital, in fact, has been under siege and intense fighting by the RSF for 18 months, with drone attacks against markets, schools, water infrastructure, gas stations, and other targets.

The UN has warned of the risk of a new humanitarian catastrophe in the city, while humanitarian organizations report extreme hunger, water shortages, and serious difficulties for the arrival of aid.
