The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called this Saturday from Damascus for international support for the reconstruction of Syria, and confirmed the United Nations’ backing for the political transition in the country, where he is on his first official trip during his mandate.

“We are ready to support a political transition and transitional justice in Syria,” Guterres stated at a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, which focused on the importance of the country’s reconstruction after several years of “suffering” for the Syrian people.
Al Shaibani indicated that Syria and the UN discussed how to develop cooperation to strengthen reconstruction efforts, and announced that three and a half million Syrians have already returned to the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.
The head of the UN maintained that, despite the difficulties, the Syrian people “have not lost their resilience and firmness,” noting that Syria is now in a phase of “recovery and investment.”

However, he affirmed that “no country emerges from a very serious conflict and rebuilds itself alone,” and added that the international community must help Syria in its determination to achieve this.
Meanwhile, Guterres promised that the UN will cooperate with Syria in all areas, along with the international community, to support its future and prosperity.
Al Shaibani agreed that “reconstruction is now the priority, which requires lifting all restrictions,” assuring that Syria “is working to create a legislative framework that will allow the country to move from a phase of emergency aid to one of sustainable development.”
Finally, both mentioned the situation in the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel, which the Syrian minister described as “Israeli violations of Syrian territory” and assured that they “constitute a direct threat to regional security.”
Guterres stressed that the territory “is Syrian land” and that the UN defends Syria’s security, independence, and territorial sovereignty, demanding an end to all violations of international law.
