The Cuban men’s water polo team is the main attraction of the day at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026, as they face Puerto Rico in the semifinals. The match is part of the Cuban delegation’s sports program at the multi-sport event, which will officially open at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in the Dominican capital.

After a sensational victory against Venezuela, Mario Bermúdez’s team will be looking for another win after their defeat in the preliminary rounds against Puerto Rico. The match will be a challenge, as the South Americans are the current champions of the event and, along with Colombia, the only undefeated team in the tournament.
For Cuba, the keys to victory will lie in strengthening their defense against a multifaceted attack and pressing the attack from the very beginning of the match, so as not to have to come from behind against a team with few weaknesses.
In the women’s division, the team (2-2) will close out the qualifying round against the favored Mexican team (4-0), the only undefeated team and favorite to win the gold medal. Miguel Artires’ students have practically secured fourth place, so they could face the Americans again in the semifinals, while Puerto Rico (3-1) and Colombia (2-2) will decide the other matchup.

Other disciplines in action
The schedule includes badminton, with the continuation of the mixed team tournament and the Cuba-Dominican Republic match. There will also be archery in the following categories: individual and women’s team compound, mixed team compound, individual and men’s team compound, individual and men’s team recurve, mixed team recurve, and individual and women’s team recurve, as well as tennis.
Meanwhile, the beach volleyball tournament features two promising pairs: Eblis Veranes and Damián Gómez in the men’s division, and Kailin de la Caridad Garrido and Maykelin Drik in the women’s. The competition will bring together 20 pairs divided into four groups of five teams, with organizers indicating that a total of 104 matches will be played over seven days.
The rowing team will begin its competition tomorrow. The first events to be held will be the women’s and men’s lightweight double sculls (2x) in direct finals, and the women’s single sculls (1x) in preliminary rounds.
The 13 selected rowers completed a training camp in the Dominican Republic under the direction of Joan Manuel Paula. Before arriving, part of the team completed a beneficial altitude training camp in Mexico in preparation for the Dominican Games.
