
Nuevo León, mexican state saw an economic impact of 10 billion pesos, equivalent to US$570 million after hosting four matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in its capital, Monterrey. Local authorities consider this result a starting point for consolidating the city as an international tourism and business destination.
According to figures presented by the Nuevo León Tourism Secretariat, 5 billion pesos equivalent to US$285 million corresponded to revenue directly linked to tourism.

During the forty days of the tournament, the state received 1.1 million visitors, representing an increase of 490,000 tourists compared to the same period the previous year. Additionally, the Monterrey Fan Festival drew 2.5 million attendees, becoming the most popular in Mexico during the World Cup.
Maricarmen Martínez Villarreal, Secretary of Tourism for Nuevo León, stated that the administration seeks to replicate the urban transformation process that Barcelona experienced after the 1992 Olympic Games. “What happened to Barcelona is what will happen to us,” the official emphasized.
The state government intends to capitalize on the momentum generated by the 2026 FIFA World Cup to strengthen tourism infrastructure and air connectivity, with new international routes from Monterrey International Airport to Madrid and Paris.

The text reads, “According to the World Travel Index, Monterrey was one of the safest cities nationally and internationally during its participation in the World Cup. According to the statistics, which are endorsed by FIFA, the capital of Nuevo León ranked as the highest-ranked Mexican city and second among the participating cities, with a score of 63.47 points.”
Although she described the overall results as very positive, Martínez Villarreal felt the city could have played a more prominent role had it not hosted a greater number of matches or games involving the Mexican national team.”
The figures were presented at an event that included the participation of the Secretary of Culture; the Director of the Monterrey Convention and Visitors Bureau, Marcela Cantú; the President of the Mexican Hotel Association of Nuevo León, Jesús Nader; and the Director of the Monterrey Open Tennis Tournament, Hernán Garza.
At the meeting, Cantú noted that attracting the 2029 Club World Cup is now a new priority for the region. Garza, for his part, announced part of the draw for the upcoming Women’s Open, which will be held from August 22 to 29, featuring Linda Noskova, Elise Mertens, Renata Zarazúa, and Giuliana Olmos.
At the national level, the third FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Mexico generated an economic impact exceeding 42 billion pesos equivalent to US$2.4 billion and attracted 7.8 million visitors to Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.
