Guatemala presents a record delegation of 480 athletes at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, headed by its only Olympic medalists.

Guatemala will compete in the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games with a delegation of 480 athletes, comprised of 213 women and 267 men.

These regional games are being held from July 24 to August 8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. According to the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG), this will be the largest delegation presented by the country in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

This number surpasses the previous largest delegations, corresponding to Mayagüez 2010, with 416 athletes, and Barranquilla 2018, with 428 athletes. The Guatemalan delegation will actively participate in 38 of the 40 sports included in the official program of the games.

Adriana Ruano, Jean Pierre Brol, and Erick Barrondo, the three Olympic medalists in Guatemalan history, will lead the delegation. These three leading figures in Guatemalan sport will be the mainstays of the team.

The text reads, “Olympic medalists return to the stage with a historic Guatemalan delegation in Santo Domingo. With 480 athletes and its top stars, the country will seek to excel in one of the main events of the Olympic cycle.”

Ruano arrives as Guatemala’s only Olympic gold medalist, after winning first place in the women’s trap shooting event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where she also set an Olympic record. The shooter will be one of Guatemala’s top contenders for the top of the podium.

Joining Ruano will be Jean Pierre Brol, bronze medalist in the men’s trap shooting event at Paris 2024. Brol completed a historic performance for Guatemalan shooting and will seek to reaffirm his status as a regional leader.

The third major figure is race walker Erick Barrondo, who won silver in the 20-kilometer race walk at London 2012. Barrondo became the first Guatemalan athlete to win an Olympic medal and, fourteen years later, will once again represent the country in one of the main competitions of the Olympic cycle.

In addition to its three Olympic medalists, Guatemala will have the vast experience of badminton player Kevin Cordón, who holds the national record of eight gold medals won in the history of these games.

Also noteworthy as official flag bearers for the delegation are Alejandra Higueros, world number one in taekwondo, and swimmer Erick Gordillo, triple gold medalist at the last edition held in San Salvador in 2013.
