Orlando consulate calls for accountability as scrutiny of ICE tactics intensifies following multiple migrant deaths.

On Thursday, the Mexican Consulate in Orlando called on the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) to determine responsibility in the death of Juan Coronilla, a 28-year-old father of two.

Coronilla died during a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation on July 14 in St. Augustine. The Mexican man was struck by a truck after fleeing on foot from ICE agents during an operation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“He had a tourist visa. He had been in the United States for three weeks and spent about two days in Florida,” said his wife, Jessica Alamilla, who traveled to Florida to seek assistance with the repatriation of his body.

The Homeland Security Department has said that the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) are investigating the incident.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry will continue to closely monitor this case and reaffirms its commitment to using all consular, legal and diplomatic instruments at its disposal to protect the rights of Mexican nationals abroad,” the Mexican Consulate in Orlando stated.

Coronilla’s case has sparked controversy because it comes amid growing scrutiny of ICE tactics. In the past month alone, two men died after being shot by agents while driving: Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado, a father of three, on July 7 in Texas, and Colombian national Joan Guerrero on July 13 in Maine.

Last week, Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Velasco asked United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk to gather information on the deaths of 17 Mexicans in the United States involving ICE officials.
